SAGINAW – A yearly test of the Covenant staff’s hazardous materials decontamination methods had a couple furry additions Wednesday.

Covenant HealthCare regularly trains more than 200 staff members in one week of HAZMAT decontamination training. Wednesday’s session added Saginaw police K9s Mitch and Deebo along with their human partner officers Jonathon Beyerlein and Rob Adams..

Emergency Room Manager Jill Toporski said this is the first time the hospital has partnered with the Saginaw Police Department in the drill. The collaborative effort was the product of several meetings where officials determined that the inclusion of K9s could help the hospital test procedures for treating patients who require service animals while also helping the police department simulate the result of potential HAZMAT situations involving K9 Units, like drug busts.
