Chance, the Anderson Police Department’s K9 officer, is back on patrol after a week of recuperating from a gunshot wound to his ear.

“We are proud to have K9 Chance protecting our officers and the citizens of Anderson, and hope you will all help us in welcoming him back!” the department posted on its Facebook page Saturday.

Chance was with his officer, Tyler Finch, during a police pursuit of a reported stolen car early on the morning of Dec. 29. As Chance was chasing the suspect, 25-year-old Dillion Sullivan of Paradise, the man shot the dog in the left ear, authorities have said.

Even after he was shot Chance was able to take the suspect to the ground so officers could handcuff him.

Local veterinarian Kristin Anderson stitched up the wound while Chance was under anesthesia and sent him home to recover with a prescription.
