Maryland Heights Police Department Canine Unit

“Hi, I’m K9 Officer …. and this is my partner …. ” Introductions like this are made on a daily basis by the K9 officers of the Maryland Heights (MO) Police Department whether they are during criminal investigations or while showing our partners off to the community.

Back on May 9, 1985, a small community in western Saint Louis County incorporated to become the City of Maryland Heights. On August 16, 1985, the Maryland Heights Police Department began its mission to become one of the premier departments in the state by commissioning its first 40 officers.

In 1988, then Chief of Police Neil Kurlander recognized that adding a canine unit to the department would give “us a very valuable tool for fighting narcotics.” Shortly thereafter, Officer Preston Kohenskey, and his canine partner, Carlos, became the first Maryland Heights canine unit.
